Phase 2: Preliminary flight experiments

	The awareness that biological processes will be influenced by space environment implies that the validity of the engineering phase currently followed for MELISSA requests the quantification of these effects.

For this purpose, in parallel with phase 1, several activities, such as MASK (Microgravity Analysis of Spirulina Kinetics), BIORAT, FEMME (First Extraterrestrial Man Made Ecosystem), and MESSAGE (Microbial Experiment in Space Station About Gene Expression), have been initiated to qualify and quantify these "space effects".
